Within the past two years, I have re-discovered working with the human form as subject. The visual studies of form that I have undertaken are focused primarily on issues of contour and value. In some cases, I have used arbitrary color for the sole purpose of defining changes in value. I firmly believe that in my work the figure informs all other works, including landscapes and abstract paintings. In addition to figurative works, I have simultaneously worked on a group of non-representational compositions. While I have fixated on the repetition of a square/rectangular mark made by a flat brush, these non-objective works are a further exploration of color and composition. These marks are initially laid on the surface randomly, without reference. Often, subconsciously, the final compositions (built intuitively) may resemble organic objects, inorganic terra forms or microbial/viral organisms as seen under a microscope. Both series of works may appear to be unrelated; however, each work produced in the studio has a dialogue with the next, whether figurative or non-objective.
